Primeval No More

June 15, 2009 by

abbyandconnor1Goodness how things change. Within 2 days of saying how good the last series of Primeval was, an article on the BBC website now says it’s been axed!

Kiss of death or what. Especially when Abby and Connor looked as though they were going to give it another try.

I did have reservations about it’s timing on a Saturday, but why cut something that has actually improved with age.  Unless of course this is a cunning marketing ploy to drum up interest from audiences and cause a stir. Controversy is always good for publicity, just look at what Gordon Ramsey’s been up to.

And what will happen to all the merchandising like the figures shown here (each sold separately). Bit of a gamble really. They could become really popular as they will be no more or totally useless as people don’t want them without the show on. Who knows?

The BBC said:

“Science fiction drama series Primeval has been axed after “three very successful series”, ITV has confirmed.

Starring Ben Miller, Douglas Henshall, and ex-S Club 7 star Hannah Spearritt, the show followed a group of scientists studying prehistoric creatures”

According to Sky:

“The dinosaur drama had been pulling in up to five million viewers in its early Saturday night slot, but now the production team has been told that the show is being ditched because it’s not prime-time material.

An ITV spokesman said: “After three very successful series of Primeval there are no plans at the present time for it to return to ITV.

“High quality drama remains a key part of the ITV schedule although our current focus is on post-watershed productions.”

Their Twitter site confirms

“Thanks for your questions about Primeval. I’ve checked and can confirm that there are no plans at the present time for it to return to ITV.”
