Mirroring

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

Okay this term is normally used when you adopt the same body language as the person you are talking to. For example, if you are seated either side of a desk and that person leans in close to the desk, you copy. It’s something we do to make the speaker feel more comfortable with you and quite often we do it without thinking.

I have a new explanation for this term. Read on.

There are many self help books, image books, how to discover yourself books on the market. All designed to help you look at yourself and help you change your ways.

I have an even better way of doing this, just watch your childrens behaviour and speech as they are ‘mirroring’ you. If ever I needed to check myself I only have to listen to what comes out of my children’s mouths. I will give a couple of examples that have recently stopped me in my tracks. They did make me smile but also made me think.

————————————————

Mom: (after smelling something unpleasant while watching a video with my daughter). - “Have you just farted?

Daughter (who is 2) -  “No, have you?”

————————————————–

After nicely telling my daughter for about the 10th time that, no sweetheart we won’t be going to the park today, we are going tomorrow, I observed this role play she had with her toys. I have to make it clear that I was really proud how patient I’d been with her.

Daughter with a mommy giraffe and a baby giraffe, this is the conversation she made up for the giraffes.

Baby giraffe: Can we go to the park?

Mommy giraffe: No sweetheart

Baby giraffe: Can we go to the park?

Mommy giraffe: No sweetheart

Baby giraffe: Can we go to the park?

Mommy giraffe: Shut UP

So if you want to take a good hard look at yourself, look at your children first

It’s a Good Day

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

I don’t know whether it’s because today is one of those gorgeous winter days, when it’s a little bit cold but there is blue sky and the sun is shining, but I am feeling inspired to get things done.

If you have read previous blogs you will know I am trying to de-clutter but so far haven’t achieved very much.  Today I have vowed to get a piece of paper on the wall and list on sticky notes everything I need to do, but in small chunks.

As I achieve I can rip up the little bits of paper and reduce the wall coverings.  For those things that need to be done regularly I am going to produce a sticker chart that my children can reward me with when I get something done.

I am also looking at recycling this week, more of that later . . .

Also, a big welcome back to Emma who had to temporarily stop writing for us due to a project she’s involved with.  We look forward to some more funny life stories from her.

Merry Christmas

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Well, we couldn’t resist in our house.  The Christmas tree is up and the front of the house is duly adorned with Christmas lights.

Now all we have to do is tidy up the huge mess we’ve made setting it all out.  It does look pretty though so the mess is worth it.

We are known for setting Christmas decorations out early.  In fact we’ve already had our friends ask us if the tree is up!

We’re not organised in any other Christmas way.  Cards get sent at the last minute, shopping done when we feel like it and presents hurriedly wrapped etc, but at least we don’t have to worry about the pretty part.

Pease International

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

I recently bought a book from Pease International on body language as I want to expand my knowledge in order to bring some additional articles to the site and to Imwags.com.  Plus one of my objectives is to read books other than ‘chick lits’ and this is a subject I am really interested in, not least to improve me.

I bought the book from their main website as I couldn’t get it from our local on-line supplier and I also signed up for their affiliate programme, so I could highlight the books on the website.

I wrote a couple of long emails, asking various questions and I am so impressed with the replies I got back.

Apart from answering everything thoroughly, the two people that wrote to me individually, Bonny and Deb were warm and friendly with their emails.

For those that don’t know Pease International is the company run by Allan Pease and his wife Barbara.  Allan is an international master of body language and I’ve seen his videos which are brilliant.  Together they have sold over 20 million books worldwide, so they must be doing something right.

Anyway I digress.  I had to send a further email to qualify some of the questions I had asked and although Deb was too busy to respond fully due to meetings, she still found the time to reply and explain that to me.

So hats off to them for such good customer service.

This is Lovely

Friday, November 17th, 2006

If you do nothing else today, please take a look at the section called ‘A Little Smile’.  I found this on the blog template I bought.  It was being used as a filler for text, but really made me feel good.

I don’t know who wrote it, but it’s great.

Be A Kid Again

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Do a cartwheel.
Sing into your hairbrush.
Walk barefoot in wet grass.
Play a song you like really loud, over and over.
Dot all your “i”’s with smiley faces.
Read the funnies. Throw the rest of the paper away.
Dunk your cookies.
Play a game where you make up the rules as you go along.
Step carefully over sidewalk cracks.
Change into some play clothes.
Try to get someone to trade you a better sandwich.
Eat ice cream for breakfast.
Kiss a frog, just in case.
Blow the wrapper off a straw.
Have someone read you a story.
Find some pretty stones and save them.
Wear your favorite shirt with you favorite pants even if they don’t match.
Take a running jump over a big puddle.
Get someone to buy you something you really don’t need.
Hide your vegetables under your napkin.
Stay up past your bedtime.
Eat dessert first.
Fuss a little, then take a nap.
Wear red gym shoes.
Put way too much sugar on your cereal.
Make cool screeching noises every time you turn a corner.
Giggle a lot for no reason.
Give yourself a gold star for everything you do today.

De Clutter

Monday, November 13th, 2006

I was privileged last night to be one of the first people to call into the inaugral Inspirational Guidance teleseminar event with Diane Corriette.

I just know being part of Diane’s club is really going to help me.  I am one muddle-headed woman at the moment and for the reasons I have already shown in earlier posts.

It was great to get advice from Diane.  I’ve got so many things running around in my head at the moment that I felt I couldn’t put any proper goals down until I de-clutter my mind and house.

I had the chance to talk this through without feeling guilty which is one of my big sins and when Diane said to leave writing goals until the end of November, to allow my de-clutter it was very reassuring.

It was like having pressure taken away (admittedly that I put there in the first place).

I really recommend having a look at Diane’s site Inspirational Guidance.  There is a great forum where you can offload and also celebrate your achievements.

Two years ago I would have said ‘who needs coaching?’.  Now I would say ‘why haven’t you got one?’.  I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Ps I achieved all but one of the goals I set last week.  The action plan is the one I still have to do (trust that one to be the biggest one!).
