Hi Geoff

Thanks for dropping by. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks like this. Although I'm sure if I handed out a questionnaire in the playground, there would be a fair few people dissatisfied with how things are.

I also think that as a nation we are too accepting of how things are and don't take time out to question them. We tend to think someone else will do things for us! (Guilty of that too!)

There has since been a rumour of them dropping the SATs for infant schools, but I've yet to check that out. Maybe it's a good time to do a bit of lobbying.

Hi Sue,

I couldn't agree more on the subject of "over-educating and under-teaching" as I like to think of it. In Australia we are doing the same damage to our children as it seems it happening in the UK.

We have junior high students (11 and 12 years old) labouring away on massive projects about topics wildly unrelated to the real world just so that some bureaucrat or politician can claim that our system is the most advanced education system on the planet.

All the while, the students are left dumbfounded. They end up re-writing the teachers words back at him/her just to get a decent mark. In most cases, the grammar, spelling and overall standard of student communication is poor. I have seen the work of senior students (17 years old) where they have passed a subject but cannot spell basic words and are unsure of how to compose a simple report.

Stand up as a parent and make your opinion heard. It is the only way you will get anything changed. Some teachers are aware of it, most are oblivious to downward trend in the quality of 3Rs teaching.
